Coalmine Records was established in the summer of 2004 by its founder and CEO Matt Diamond p/k/a DJ Dutchmaster. As a DJ while attending Indiana University, Diamond grew tired of the direction hip-hop was headed, and held on to a lifelong dream of running his own record label. Diamond hopes to help reinvent the culture and brand of nineties New York boom-bap he held close to his heart. This dream became a reality with Coalmine Records debut 12" release, The Raw. Featuring the lyrical talents of Saigon, Inspectah Deck and newcomer Bekay (Coalmine's first signed artist), The Raw highlights the classic New York sound Diamond grew up on. After receiving tremendous feedback and gracing countless mix shows and mix tapes worldwide, The Raw charted as the number one college radio hip hop song in the nation. Coalmines second 12" release features the talents of undisputed world freestyle king and 1993 New Music Seminar MC Battle champion, Supernatural. The feedback was nothing short of outstanding as many DJs worldwide consider Altitude/1-2 Punch Supernatural's best single to date. With another chart topping 12" under the belt, Coalmine Records has begun to brand itself into the indie radio community. Coalmine Records is now set to begin its two-fold strategy to expand the label and its concepts. While the first stage involves releasing Contraband in 2007, a compilation gathering all of Coalmine's pre-existing 12"s, the second tier will see the release of the flagship recording artist Bekays debut album Hunger Pains. In the meantime Coalmine Records will be releasing "The Foundation" Mix CD. The Foundation MIX CD is a 17 track mixed discography of previously released, remixed and new releases produced entirely by Shuko. Hosted by Heltah Skeltah and mixed by DJ Dutchmaster, The Foundation features appearances from Bekay, Frank B., Papoose, ODB, Jae Millz, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Rakim, Army of the Pharaohs, R.A. The Rugged Man, Saigon, Doujah Raze, Cuban Link, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Dre Robinson and more. Promo for The Foundation begins in early Jan 07 with the vinyl release of the lead single, Midnight Madness featuring Heltah Skeltah and DJ Revolution. Scheduled for a third quarter 2007 release, Coalmine has recruited some of the hottest producers in the game to craft beats for Bekays unveiling of his full length LP, "Hunger Pains". Producers tapped include: The Alchemist, Jonathan Rotem [J.R], DJ Babu, Illmind, German super producer Shuko, Seattles BeanOne, Marco Polo and Street Orchestra. Furthermore Coalmine has enlisted the skills of some of the industrys hottest artists: Masta Ace, R.A. the Rugged Man, Wordsworth and Pumpkinhead. Always looking to showcase DJ talent, Coalmine throws talented turntabilists DJ Revolution and Mista Sinista (formerly of the X-Ecutioners) into the already golden mix. Hunger Pains is set to bring NY indie hip-hop back to the forefront. Coalmine maintains the philosophy that artists need not just be found, but rather cultivated and their talents harnessed to fully reach their potential. Like coal turning into diamonds, artists need the right conditions to completely excel. Coalmine Records looks forward to the impact their label will have on hip-hop music and its fans worldwide.
